Dear friends, dear supporters and dear fans!

We are back with a new update from from the EDGE16 competition season.

TU Wien Racing at the Hockenheimring

In August, the time had finally come: TU Wien Racing set off for the international Formula Student Germany competition at the Hockenheimring, one of the most important and exciting events of the season. On Sunday, August 17, the adventure began with the arrival of the first team members, who made the initial preparations on site. The excitement was palpable, because our race car, the EDGE16, arrived on Monday. It was immediately sent for the first technical inspection of the event, the accumulator scrutineering, which was completed the next day. On Tuesday, the main focus was on Mechanical Scrutineering. Although there was not quite enough time on that day, we were able to successfully complete the inspection the following day with full commitment. Before that, there were preparations for the static disciplines and the official opening ceremony on Tuesday.

Wednesday was packed with tasks ranging from electrical scrutineering and pre-inspection to the first statics discipline, the business plan presentation. A particular highlight of the day was the very first driverless scrutineering in the team's history! This got off to a very good start overall, but we were also able to gather some initial ideas on how we can become even stronger next season. Thursday started as a statics day with the engineering design and cost report. Unfortunately, we were unable to participate in any finals in the statics, but the team continued to make history in the driverless activities. The first driverless scrutineering was successfully completed, securing us our very first driverless sticker, so nothing stood in our way of participating in the dynamics.

The brake and tilt test was also scheduled for that day. The subsequent driverless skidpad was mastered with ease and was an emotional victory for the team. The same euphoria continued on Friday, when our EDGE16 with the driverless system was able to compete in the acceleration discipline. The classic skidpad and acceleration with our driver were also successfully completed.

The next day started with a course walk, which gave us our first impressions of the track. This was followed by autocross, and then the first award ceremony in the evening. On Sunday, after a final course walk, it was time for the supreme discipline, the endurance race, which we successfully completed. After the pit move out, the second award ceremony took place, which was a nice end to an eventful but also unforgettable week. After intensive preparation, long nights in the workshop, and an exciting week of events, we are delighted with a strong 15th place among 83 international teams. This result is not only proof of the technical quality of our vehicle, but also of the great team spirit and commitment of each individual. We are taking away many valuable experiences and are highly motivated to compete even further ahead in the last event of the season, FS Italy!

DMG MORI

DMG MORI is a leading global manufacturer of machine tools and provides us with crucial support in the development of our EDGE16.

In particular, the precise tool and mold making made possible by our partner is a key factor in the success of our race car. Thanks to access to a 5-axis CNC milling machine (DMU 40) and a CNC lathe (CTX 350) at the DMG MORI TechCenter Stockerau, we have been able to massively expand our internal manufacturing capacities. Our team members are trained directly by DMG MORI application engineers and then manufacture independently – a huge step forward compared to our previous dependence on external contract manufacturers.

In addition, the TechCenter Stockerau is a central meeting place for SMEs in the CNC machine tool industry in eastern Austria, offering the opportunity to experience five machines live, test them through trial machining, and test new manufacturing technologies with industry partners.

With its commitment to school and university education, DMG MORI is helping to bring the MX approach and the intelligent connection between man and machine to the next generation of industry experts and decision-makers.

Many thanks to DMG MORI for its strong support!

Until then!
