Newsflash Inbetween Events

Dear friends, dear supporters and dear fans!

We are back with a new update from the competition period of EDGE15.

After the competition is before the competition

At the end of July, we finished the first official competition of the season, Formula Student Austria (FSA), in Spielberg. After returning to Vienna, we were able to support another BMW-sponsored team and shared our workshop for two days with Munich Motorsport, who were making a stopover before their next competition. Helping each other out is classic for Formula Student, but it also creates a stronger community between the teams of the BMW family.

Preparation for FS Germany (FSG)

Unfortunately, we encountered problems with components of the EDGE15 during FSA, which made it impossible to participate in most of the dynamic disciplines. As they could not be resolved in the short time between competitions, we decided to withdraw from FS East in Hungary. This allowed us to prepare all the better for the next competition, Formula Student Germany.

Instead, the team made the most of their time in Vienna and gave it their all during these days. The members spent the majority of their time in the workshop making the necessary repairs to the EDGE and adapting the car to the changes that had been made. Since the end of July, the focus has therefore been on restoring the car to competitive condition, followed by extensive testing in the last few days before travelling to FSG. At the competition at the Hockenheimring, the EDGE15 will not only compete in the disciplines with our drivers, but will also cover distances autonomously.

Driverless

At FS Germany, we will be driving driverless for the first time at an event. The EDGE will drive without a driver, but only via software. For autonomous driving, the EDGE requires a 360° 3D LIDAR sensor in front of the cockpit, which gives it a wide field of vision.

As of this year, there is no longer a combustion engine category on FSG, which is why only racing cars with an electric motor can take part. Driverless is part of the electric classification. This new regulation incentivises teams to develop a driverless system in order to score points in this classification.

Time for FSG

Last Saturday, the tools, accessories and camping equipment were finally loaded up again to set off for Germany the following day. On Sunday, it was time once again and we made our way to the Hockenheimring to take part in our second official competition of the season. FS Germany takes place from 12 to 18 August and is the biggest event for electric and driverless cars in the world. We are highly motivated for a successful participation and good results with our race car as well as in the static disciplines.

HP Inc.

Designing components, analysing strengths, simulating air flows and rendering images - all this is part of our daily business and requires enormous computing power. Thanks to the Z840 performance workstations from HP, which have been available to us for several years, we can carry out all the necessary calculations in realistic resolution and in a short time. These workstations enable us to obtain simulation results in just a few minutes, which significantly increases our efficiency. For this season, HP has again provided us with new Z840 performance workstations, which make a significant part of our daily work easier and enable us to realise our projects efficiently and sustainably.

We would like to thank HP Inc. for their support!

Until then!
